Henri Michaux

Peintures sur cartoile, 1980-1983

March 5 — March 20, 2021

The pictorial work of the poet Henri Michaux (1899-1984) is mostly produced on paper. Each sheet may play host not only to words but to marks, phrases and brushstrokes forming characters. However, Michaux also sometimes ventured onto canvas using what is known as “cartoile”, cardboard covered in canvas. Thus, his works became “paintings”. This exhibition brings together a dozen of these paintings, produced between 1980 and 1983. A number of them show the horizon of an imaginary landscape, often at dusk, peopled with indeterminate figures; we see blues and greens, a departure from the artist’s usual palette. On another, an enigmatic figure appears, like some sort of Gollum. Michaux’s exploration of new depths of consciousness, to paraphrase his untranslated work Connaissance par les gouffres, can be seen in these moving paintings.
